More lightning photos.

Forgot to add this before.. I posted the rest of the lightning photos on my photo page. I quite like some of the earlier ones, even though they don’t necessarily have clearly visible strikes:

The way the sky is all lit up is pretty cool. The 2 that I posted in my journal before are the last 2 in the series. All in all I’m very pleased with the series of photos, and very grateful I had this oppurtunity to take the photos at all. Unless you live in an area prone to storms, chances like that don’t come along too often.

What kind of camera are you using?

I just bought a Canon EOS Digital Rebel 300D, so I plan to get some nice pictures like these. Too bad it never storms down here :)

Nice photos james. I was wandering around capitol hill when the storm started. I’m awfully glad I wasn’t at work taking all the outage calls that were surely rolling in.

We hardly ever get storms here either, so this was a pretty rare occurence.

I took the photos with an Olympus E-10, Digital SLR. Aperture was set to F/11 to get the minimum of light coming in. The exposure was anything from about 3 seconds to 15 seconds, depending on how long I had to wait for a strike. With digital cameras, noise is a problem with long exposures in the dark, so anything over 10-15 seconds was pretty bad (although some of the ones in the gallery are around 15 seconds). Also used a wide angle lens to make sure I caught as much of the sky as possible..

Good luck with your new camera.. it’s a lot of fun going out shooting. I did a lot last summer and I’m hoping to do a lot more this year.

I’d actually pay money to do that:

    Customer: The internet broke! wtf!
CSR: You may have noticed, the storm?
    Customer: Storm?
CSR: You do know phone lines have a tendency to get struck by lightning during storms?
    Customer: *zap* *clunk*
CSR: Have a nice day! *click*
