Aurora Borealis
I’m just getting so lucky with weather phenomena lately. First, the most spectacular electrical storm I’ve ever seen (which I managed to get some great photos of) and now the Aurora freaking Borealis in my back garden. Unbelievable.
The photos don’t really do it justice.. It sort of ripples through the sky at astounding speed.. I’ve always wanted to see it, and even though this was very faint, it was still very cool. I’d like to go up to Alaska (or Norway) one day to get a better look..
Anyway, here’s a shot:

A bunch more can be found in my gallery.

Nov 07, 04 at 6:03 pmdude, is that happening NOW?
I saw it once in Spokane but it was colorless.

Nov 07, 04 at 6:08 pmWell, it had pretty much stopped when I last looked. I went out and saw it after someone posted on the Seattle community about it. This looked colourless as well, to the naked eye, apart from one time when it got really bright. In the photos, the green comes out much more clearly..

Nov 08, 04 at 3:38 pmNice shot. For a change, I’m jealous of where you live. I couldn’t see it or the Leonid shower from anywhere in Seattle. Damn not having a car or I’d have headed up north.

Nov 08, 04 at 3:53 pmOh, speaking of photo stuff, do you have the MCON converter? I couldn’t remember if you bought it. I haven’t had a chance to get some good before and after samples with it since I don’t have a table-top tripod that’ll be level with my reef at the height required, but the difference throught the viewfinder is amazing. Focus is down to about 3-4″, and the depth of field is just paper thin with an incredibly sharp image. I’m guess the magnification is somewhere between 1.75-2x the unassissted lens. I might try stacking up a bunch of books and trying it again just to get a feel for it, but for $65 or so, its a nice buy if you like macros.

Nov 08, 04 at 3:56 pmOh I’m a total sucker for macro/shallow depth of field shots. In fact, I picked up the MCON on ebay recently. What with moving I really haven’t had a chance to play with it yet. Do you have any examples up anywhere?

Nov 08, 04 at 4:02 pmNot yet. I haven’t been shooting outside lately, and I mainly bought it because the real beauty of the reef corals I’m keeping can only been seen with macros.
I’ll try to get one or two of the zooanthid colonies and the sexy shrimp (If it’ll cooperate and get close enough) without a tripod in the next day or so. I keep meaning to anyways.
