Smmmokin’!
I’ve smoked since I was about, oh I dunno.. 17 or so. At my most frequent, I was smoking a pack and a half of Marlboro reds a day. That was when I was at university, which was (holy crap) 10 years ago.
Anyway, a few years ago, I quit. I managed to stay off for about 2 years. In the last year though, I’ve lapsed. I’d have one or two a week, then one a day.. Most recently I reached the point where I was smoking 3 or 4 a day although that was only for about a week. By smoker standards, it’s not much.. but for someone who has had 3 pulmonary embolisms, and has permanent damage to one of their lungs which will never heal, it’s pretty stupid.
So that’s it – I’m done. No more. Yeah I’ve said it before, but this time I’m hoping I can make it. One of the tools I used before when I quit was a list of benefits based on time since quitting. This one, in fact. I also have a handy script which shows (to the second) how long it’s been, lest I forget the date. As of right now it stands at 1 Week, 0 Days, 17 Hours, 23 Minutes and 7 Seconds. I hope to have to modify the script to handle counting of years at some point.

Mar 25, 05 at 11:28 amI think it’s awesome that you’re doing this. I smoked for about a year of my life, more of a social smoker. Now I have one maybe once or twice a year with friends. It all seems a little silly if you really think about it.

Mar 25, 05 at 11:30 amNice. I’m not doing a particularly good job with the quitting thing, but I hope to start thinking about it again soon.
PS. The weather is getting nice, lets go shoot some animals. =)

Mar 25, 05 at 11:31 amCongratulations. I know you can do it. I smoked (occasionally and then regularly) from age 8 to age 17. And I don’t need to tell you the dangers of smoking, you figured it out.

Mar 25, 05 at 11:47 amThe weather is insane. We’ve been having BBQs and such.. pretty much since the start of February. Anyway, we can chat via email or IRC about shooting. I have stuff going on this weekend, but maybe next weekend would work? Although, having just checked weather.com, it’s reporting rain starting tomorrow and continuing at least until next Sunday, so maybe we should play that by ear a little :)

Also keeps track of how many cigarettes you haven’t smoked and how much money you’ve saved. :)

Mar 25, 05 at 11:50 amIt’s especially silly when you’ve already cheated death once. Beating one cancer only to give yourself a reasonable chance of getting a different one is the sort of thing people win Darwin awards for.

Mar 25, 05 at 12:17 pmgreat job!! I’m committed to quit for good (I’ve been closet smoking again) on Oct 1 of this year (Annabel’s 2nd bday) so she never remembers me smoking. I think it’s a disgusting habit, but I never succeed at quitting unless I set a long-term goal and wean myself slowly… ;)

Mar 25, 05 at 12:42 pmWell good luck with that.. I (literally) just updated my script so it marks off how far you are on the benefit timeline. You’re welcome to a copy of the code if you want it :)

Mar 25, 05 at 12:50 pmI was able to completely quit the day I found out I was pregnant, too.. btw ;) I don’t want it to sound like I smoked while I was pregnant, I started closet smoking again (1-2 a day) when she was around 5 months :(
