First, the most spectacular electrical storm I’ve ever seen (which I managed to get some great photos of) and now the Aurora freaking Borealis in my back garden. Unbelievable.

The photos don’t really do it justice.. It sort of ripples through the sky at astounding speed.. I’ve always wanted to see it, and even though this was very faint, it was still very cool. I’d like to go up to Alaska (or Norway) one day to get a better look..

Anyway, here’s a shot:

A bunch more can be found in my gallery.

The way the sky is all lit up is pretty cool. The 2 that I posted in my journal before are the last 2 in the series. All in all I’m very pleased with the series of photos, and very grateful I had this oppurtunity to take the photos at all. Unless you live in an area prone to storms, chances like that don’t come along too often.

While in England I had an oppurtunity to take some photos in limited light, and of water, which is an effect I’ve been wanting to try for a while. With the aid of some neutral density filters, I was able to have longer exposures in slightly better light, which allows more detail to come out, but still with the longer exposures. It results in an interesting ghostly effect with the water that I quite like. Ideally I think you really need to go to a 60 second exposure to get this effect looking really good, but my camera will do 30 seconds at the most, even with the cable release.

The photos I took with explanations in the descriptions are here. My favourite shot out of the set is this one:
<lj-cut>

</lj-cut>

My other photos from England will be online as soon as I get around to converting them all (done about 25% so far – still quite a few to go).

Last night a lot of the snow melted, and then re-froze, coating the trees with a thick layer of ice. This in turn caused the trees to start collapsing under the weight. We live next to a lot of trees, so more than once during the night, I was woken up by a loud creaking sound, followed by the sound of a branch crashing to the ground. Amazing how what appears to be a small amount of ice can do so much damage. One branch actually went through the window of the apartment immediately below us. I took some photos this morning, but I was in a hurry so they didn’t come out well. At any rate, here’s a nice shot of a branch covered in ice, and if you go to the gallery you’ll see the photos I added today starting at number 5.

Night time photos of snow are not especially easy, but with some experimentation I found a combination of shutter speed and apperture settings that produced some shots I liked. If there’s lots of snow, I may add more tomorrow from the day time. At any rate, the album is here. I experimented with making the photos black and white as well, but it only improved matters on one photo. My favourite shot from the group is this one:

The colour is actually about right. Light pollution makes the sky fairly orange looking.. I could correct for it, but I think it looks nice as it is.
